Areas we cover in Edinburgh & the Lothians

We arrange no-obligation solar and battery surveys and quotes across the City of Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian. From Leith tenements to detached houses in Balerno and new builds in Livingston, if your postcode starts with EH we can help — including conservation-area and tenement properties.

Edinburgh cityscape with historic architecture and surrounding hills

Solar Battery Edinburgh is exactly that — focused on Edinburgh and the surrounding Lothians. We know the local housing stock, from New Town tenements and Marchmont stone terraces to post-war suburbs and modern developments in the Lothians. That local knowledge matters because it affects what kind of system is practical, what consents you might need, and how the installation is carried out.

City of Edinburgh neighbourhoods

We cover every neighbourhood in the City of Edinburgh council area. Whether you live in a basement flat in Stockbridge, a tenement in Marchmont, a villa in Morningside, or a family home in Corstorphine or Portobello, we can arrange a survey and quote. Below are some of the areas we regularly work in — if your street is not listed, we almost certainly still cover it.

Tenements and conservation areas

Edinburgh has one of the largest conservation-area footprints of any UK city. The New Town, Old Town, Marchmont, the Grange, Dean Village, and Stockbridge all have designations that can affect what solar work is visible from the street. Tenement flats add the further complication of shared roof ownership and common stairs.

We are experienced in advising on these properties. At survey we look at what is practical within the constraints: rear-elevation panels that are not visible from the street, flat-roof and ground-floor options, and where listed-building consent or conservation-area consent is needed. We explain the position clearly before you commit to anything, and we never suggest work that would breach local planning rules.

The Lothians

Beyond the city boundary we cover all three Lothian council areas. The housing here ranges from stone-built Midlothian villages to the new-build estates of West Lothian and the coastal towns of East Lothian. Whatever your property type, we can assess it and prepare a quote.

Rural and outlying properties

The Lothians include a lot of rural and outlying properties — farms, smallholdings, and isolated houses around the Pentlands, the East Lothian coast, and the West Lothian countryside. These are often excellent candidates for solar and battery because they typically have larger roofs, fewer shading issues, and higher consumption than urban flats. If you are on a rural property anywhere in EH postcode area, we can survey it.

Not sure if we cover you?

If your postcode starts with EH, we almost certainly do. Send us your postcode and we will confirm, usually the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover the whole of Edinburgh?
Yes. We arrange surveys and quotes across the entire City of Edinburgh council area, from Leith and Portobello to South Queensferry, Balerno, and the Heriot-Watt campus area. If your postcode starts with EH, we can help.
Do you install in Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian?
Yes. We cover Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg and Penicuik in Midlothian; Musselburgh, Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar in East Lothian; and Livingston, Bathgate and Linlithgow in West Lothian, among many other towns.
Can you work on tenement flats in Edinburgh?
We can advise on tenement properties, though shared roof ownership and listed-building or conservation-area rules can restrict what is possible. We assess your building at survey and explain the options, including rear-elevation or ground-floor approaches where street-facing installation is not permitted.
Do you handle conservation-area properties?
Yes. Many Edinburgh neighbourhoods — the New Town, Marchmont, the Grange, Dean Village — are conservation areas. We advise on what is visible from the street, what consents may be needed, and design the system to respect the character of the area.
